Weather & Logistics

Weather in the Galápagos

The Galápagos boasts warm weather year-round with two distinct seasons:

  • Hot & Wet (December – May): Warmer waters, occasional showers, lush landscapes. Temperatures are typically in the 80’s Fahrenheit.

  • Cool & Dry (June – November): Cooler temperatures, nutrient-rich waters attract diverse marine life. Temperatures are typically in the 70’s Fahrenheit.

The Galapagos Islands straddle the Equator so the sun is extremely intense year round. Do not shy away from a minimum of SPF 30 and clothing to protect yourself from the sun. If you are looking for packing list ideas, check out our blog post on what to pack!

Getting to the Islands

Flights from mainland Ecuador from Quito or from Guyaquil land at San Cristóbal Airport (SCY) in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno or Baltra Airport (GPS) near Santa Cruz.

  • San Cristóbal Airport (SCY): 5-minute taxi ride to the main town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.

  • Baltra Airport (GPS): 10-minute bus to a ferry ($5 per person) + 10-minute ferry ride ($1 per person) from Baltra island to Santa Cruz + 45-minute taxi or bus ride to Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz’s main town). [Note: You will need cash - US Dollars -for both the bus ride and the ferry!

Getting Around

  • San Cristóbal: Compact and walkable; taxis are available. You can also opt to rent a motor scooter or bike, but know that these are in limited supply in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. We found many restaurants just next door and the closest beach to the town, Playa Mann, was only 10 mins by foot and a great place to relax and watch the sea lions play in the water. The town is right behind the port for day trips or cruises to other islands.

  • Santa Cruz: Larger; taxis and buses available; Puerto Ayora is very walkable. We found it easy to walk to shops and restaurants. The Darwin Center and nearest beach, Playa de la Estacion, were 15-20 mins by foot from our centrally located hotel. If you want to explore outside of the town, you can opt to rent a motor scooter or bike. From the town, expect a 15 min walk to the ferry terminal.

Top Things to See & Do on Each Island

San Cristóbal

  • Playa Lobería – Beautiful sandy beach just a few kilometers from the airport. Great for snorkeling with sea lions and sea turtles.

  • Playa Mann – Beautiful sunset views, some sea lions lounging on the sand and swimming in the water. This was one of our favorite beaches and is easily walkable from the main town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.

  • Interpretation Center & Tijeretas Hill & Beach – It is a 15 min walk from the port area to the exhibit center where you will find a lot of info on the Galapagos. The interpretation center provides information about how the Galapagos islands were formed, the differences between the islands, and gives an in-depth perspective about the challenges with living on the inhabited islands and conservation efforts. This is a must see if you are visiting San Cristobal. From here these is a nice walk around the grounds with viewpoints and a further hike will take you to the beaches and snorkel spots. You will take the Path to Playa Carola and take the split to the right to get to Tijeretas Hill and the rocky lava beach for snorkeling. Up the hill you can find a large statue of Charles Darwin and views of the bay. If you keep left to the fork in the road on the Path to Playa Carola, you will end at the sandy beach of Point Carola where you will find many sea lions, some marine iguanas, and surfers.

  • Playa Cerro Brujo – Stunning white sand beach with a volcanic landscape and turquoise water on the north side of the island. Here you can find lava gulls and playful sea lions.

  • Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido) – Epic snorkeling/diving with sharks and rays. You will need to take a day trip here via boat, but it is totally worth the trip! If you are a scuba diver, this is one of the best places to see hammerhead sharks. We circled this area at sunset and it was beautiful to witness. You can see plenty of sea birds flying to and from the island.

  • El Junco Lagoon – The only freshwater lagoon on the Galapagos formed by a collapsed volcano. This lagoon in is in the middle of the island (about a 45 min drive from town) with bird watching opportunities for Darwin’s Finches, the Galapagos Dove, and the Frigate bird.

Santa Cruz

  • Tortuga Bay – Gorgeous white-sand beach with marine iguanas. There is a trail taking 30-45 mins by foot or you can bike or take a water taxi to get here.

  • Charles Darwin Research Station – This is the place to learn about conservation efforts on the Galapagos. This was also one of our favorite places to visit. You will read about the conservation efforts on the island and about the tortoise breeding program to help grow the tortoise population and their effects on the ecosystem. You’ll also learn about Charles Darwin and his journey through the Galapagos islands, and see the tortoise conservation center. One of the most interesting exhibits is seeing lonesome George. He was the last Pinta Island subspecies of the Giant Tortoise. Here you can learn about the life and extinction of lonesome George. This experience was extremely impactful.

  • Las Grietas – A natural lava rock swimming crevice with snorkeling and cliff jumping. You will need to take a short water taxi from the main dock in town to Finch Bay. From there, you’ll follow signs to the Finch Bay Hotel keeping the ocean to your left, and once reaching the hotel, take the path with the signage to Las Grietas. It’s now $10 for a guide to enter. Go early or later in the afternoon to avoid crowds.

  • El Chato Tortoise Reserve – See giant tortoises in their natural habitat. This is a really cool experience and definitely worth the trip. You walk through a large nature preserve (old farmland) with many giant tortoises wandering around the fields and lounging in the water. There is an old lava tube on site and easy nature walk around the property to observing the giant tortoises!

  • Las Bachas: You will need to arrange your own ground transportation or take a boat to get this beautiful secluded white sand beach. This beach offers incredible views of Daphne Major and Daphne Minor with pelicans swirling overhead and sally lightfoot crabs dancing on the black lava rocks. This area is definitely worth a visit for view and snorkeling. You may even see some sea turtles!

  • Cerro Dragon: This was one of our absolute favorite places to visit on Santa Cruz. You will need to take a licensed tour boat to access this area. The views of dragon hill with its electric green foliage against the black lava rocks and white sandy beach was an impressive sight. This estuary area provided some of the best wildlife viewing. The land iguanas were casually strolling along the footpaths and sunbathing. If you are lucky you may even catch a glimpse of the flamingos!

  • Puerto Ayora Fish Market – A fun spot to watch sea lions and pelicans battle for scraps.

  • Shopping: Check out the numerous art galleries, Chocolápagos for a variety of delicious turtle and seal shaped chocolates, Darwin + Wolf for gifts and rash guards, and Patas Azules for your Galapagos socks!

  • Golden Bay Hotel – Luxury stay right on the waterfront.

  • Casa Opuntia – Comfortable mid-range boutique hotel. We stayed at the Casa Opuntia and absolutely loved the location and the hotel. The hotel offered a delicious complementary breakfast with great views of the ocean. We especially loved the large rooms and the balcony with a hammock. Overall we had a great experience and would highly recommend this hotel!

  • Hostal Terito – Budget-friendly, great location.

Santa Cruz

Hotal Acacia in Santa Cruz

  • Finch Bay Hotel – Top eco-luxury beachfront hotel. If you are looking for an amazing luxury experience in the Galapagos, this is the place to go. Amazing restaurants, excursions, and a beautiful beach walk.

  • Hotel Acacia– Mid-range hotel with a beautiful pool, free breakfast, and just up the street from many shops and restaurants. We stayed at this hotel and loved that it was both close to everything but far enough off the main street making it nice and quiet. It was walkable to all of the main sights within Puerto Ayora. We highly recommend this hotel for the ambiance, pool, and the amazing staff. The rooms are a great size and very comfortable and the breakfast was wonderful. We really enjoyed our stay here.

  • Hostal España – Budget-friendly and centrally located.

Where to Eat

San Cristóbal

  • Umami Galápagos– Great location and vibe that opens up to the main square that also looks over the water. They have a great variety of both indoor and outdoor seating for those pleasant San Cristobal nights. The food and cocktails were both delicious. We even saw a local school break dance performance in the town square from the restaurant. It was a really cool experience!

  • Midori Sushi and Pub – This is a really cool sushi and dinner place with fantastic cocktails. If you aren’t in the cocktail mood, then you have to try a limonada de coco (a coconut and limeade smoothie). We can’t remember if this is actually on the menu but our hotel recommended asking for this mocktail smoothie and we had it so many times throughout our trip, it was so refreshing in the hot/humid climate!

  • The Pier Restaurant & Cevicheria– If you are looking for fresh seafood, good cocktails, and a great location, check out the Pier. It is on the outskirts of the town (a really short walk), but is a great place to relax and take in the views and sunset.

  • Post Office Golden Prague Restaurant: If you are looking for some Czech and German inspired dishes this is a really cool waterfront dining location. They have really good Czech inspired beers and a great outdoor seating area where you can watch the water and the Sea Lions.

Santa Cruz

  • Almar– Upscale dining with fresh seafood. The views are incredible. We sat outside admiring the sea views, the numerous crabs and marine iguanas lounging nearby, and watching the pelicans was an absolutely amazing experience. We even spotted some large sea turtles in the water by our table. The food was delicious and was a fun and unexpected wildlife watching experience.

  • Santa Cruz Brewery: A great local microbrew with two floors. The beers are pretty solid and the ambiance makes you feel like your at your local microbrewery at home - only with water views.

  • Midori: A sushi and ramen restaurant with great cocktails! The outdoor ambiance and vibes are great. This is a really cool restaurant to just hang out and enjoy the food and scene.

  • Nikkei Galapagos – A really cool multi-story sushi restaurant with amazing views. We popped in for dinner and a drink and the moon reflecting off of the water was a wonderful backdrop.

  • 1835 Restaurant & Coffee – Great coffee shop with cool ambiance!

Vibe, Wildlife, & Ecotourism

San Cristóbal

  • More relaxed and less touristy. The wildlife is in the forefront on this island.

  • Easier access to some of the best snorkeling and dive sites.

  • Ideal for travelers who love a laid-back atmosphere and marine life.

  • Home to one of the largest sea lion colonies in the Galápagos.

  • Best island for seeing blue-footed boobies and pelicans diving for fish and large colonies of sea lions and marine iguanas lounging on the port beaches.

  • Take a short excursion to snorkel or scuba dive with hammerhead sharks at Kicker Rock.

  • Conservation efforts: Strong focus on protecting local marine ecosystems and reducing tourism impact. The interpretation center does a great job of explaining the importance of conservation efforts on the island and how the inhabitants create a sustainable and thriving ecosystem.

  • Galapagos Science Center and Universidad San Francisco de Quito also offer some great resources, information, and conservation efforts. Stop by either of these facilities to learn more!

Santa Cruz

  • Most populated island with the largest town of Puerto Ayora. This is the 2nd largest island of the Galapagos in area.

  • Santa Cruz has more diverse habitats and micro-climates so has more of a variety of vegetation

  • More dining and nightlife options.

  • Has a wider range of accommodations.

  • Best starting point for day trips to other islands.

  • Famous for giant tortoises in their natural habitat.

  • Along with the tortoises, there are also land iguanas (we saw one as soon as landed at Baltra Airport!), and Darwin’s finches. You will see seals and marine iguanas on rocks by the water.

  • Opportunity to visit sustainable farms and Eco-lodges.

  • Conservation efforts: Charles Darwin Research Station plays a key role in tortoise breeding and habitat restoration. Don’t miss this stop and learning all about the impact this research station has on the Galapagos.

Top Day Trips & Excursions & When to Reserve

From San Cristóbal

Kicker Rock, Galapagos, Ecuador

Kicker Rock

  • Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido) Snorkeling/Diving – Reserve at least a few days in advance. The rock itself is picturesque, but most people choose to come here to dive with the hammerhead sharks.

  • Española Island – Book in advance; one of the best islands for wildlife. This is one of the only places in the wold where the waved albatrosses return to nest. The only other location is a small breeding colony on Isla de la Plata, 17 miles off the Ecuadorian coast. The waived albatrosses nest from April to June and can be spotted from April to December.

  • 360° Tour of San Cristóbal – Can book on arrival, but best to reserve ahead.

From Santa Cruz

Bartolome Island, Galapagos, Ecuador

Bartolomé Island

  • North Seymour Island – Book in advance for birdwatching (frigatebirds, blue-footed boobies).

  • Bartolomé Island – Stunning landscapes and snorkeling; best to book early. We personally took this tour and absolutely loved it. We learned so much about the volcanic island, the differences between the types of volcanic cones, and some amazing wildlife facts. Other than the amazing iconic views our highlight was seeing and snorkeling with a Galapagos penguin!

  • Isabela Island Day Trip – Consider an overnight stay instead of a rushed day trip, but if you want to do a day trip there are some amazing areas to check out to snorkel with the sea lions, observe sea turtles, penguins, flamingos, and many varieties of fish and marine life!

Some things to consider:

Sea Lions on a bench on Santa Cruz
  • If you prioritize snorkeling and fewer crowds, San Cristóbal may be a good choice. San Cristóbal quite literally has more sea lions than people - and the sea lions and wildlife truly own the town. If you want more authentic and raw Galapagos and don’t mind fewer amenities, San Cristóbal is a great choice.

  • If you want more tour options, better infrastructure, and nightlife, Santa Cruz may be right for you. Puerto Ayora is the main town in Santa Cruz and is large enough to feel like you are in a small city with plenty of amenities. If you want to prioritize comfort and options and want a slightly more urban feel, Santa Cruz is a great choice.

  • If time allows, visit both for the ultimate experience! Each offers a completely different vibe and feel and will give you a unique Galapagos experience.

How Should You Choose Which Island?

  • Pick San Cristóbal if: You love a quiet, nature-immersed experience with fewer crowds.

  • Pick Santa Cruz if: You want more hotel and food options, easy access to day tours.

Final Thoughts

Both San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz offer incredible experiences, but choosing the right one depends on your priorities. If you love a relaxed, nature-immersed experience with easy snorkeling and diving, San Cristóbal is ideal. If you prefer more tour options, better infrastructure, and a balance of wildlife and convenience, Santa Cruz is the better choice.

Better yet—if time allows, visit both! You’ll get the best of both worlds and an unforgettable Galápagos adventure.
